Delaware County Christmas Bird Count

Join us for the Delaware County Christmas Bird Count on Saturday, January 3!  Those counting by car will meet at 8:45 a.m. in the parking lot of the Charles W. Brown Planetarium on the Ball State campus (2111 W. Riverside Ave.).  You can also count from home or from a stationary blind or bird feeding station.

To participate, contact Jim Schowe at jim.schowe@gmail.com. Rose and Jim Jeffery will host a post-count open house for teams finishing up mid-day or wanting to stop in for a mid-count warm-up.

During last year’s bird count, 675 species—and more than 40 million individual birds—were observed in the U.S. (See www.audubon.org/news/125th-christmas-bird-count-summary for the full report.) Our local count in December 2024 tallied 44 species and 5,440 individual birds.  Participants covered a 10-miles radius from the center of Muncie over the course of the day.  Full results are available here

The Audubon Society conducted the first Christmas Bird Count in 1900, making it the Western Hemisphere’s longest-running wildlife census and one of the world’s greatest ongoing citizen-science efforts. Scientists use the data gathered to help track trends in bird populations and address conservation issues.
